‘Stop’, ‘Give Way’, ‘Do not enter’… there are any number of road signs we encounter on an almost daily basis from the day we pass our driving test. And we basically respond to them on autopilot.
But how would you react if you came across a sign warning you of potential zombies ahead? Or to simply be ‘beware of road surprises’? Would you proceed with extra caution? Would you proceed at all?
Thanks to language barriers, different sets of international driving laws and at times, for no apparent reason at all, there are some rather unusual road signs dotted around the globe – many of them in the US.
Here are some of our favourites.
IN THE USA
America. Land of the crazy road sign…
CAUTION WATER ON ROAD DURING RAIN
You don’t say!? We’re not sure how to break this to the nation but generally, rain does tend to make things a little wet. For those who are prone to forgetfulness, and carelessness, this handy sign explains things very clearly.
DONT’T DRINK AND DRIVE
Seems pretty standard, right? Take another look. The creator of this sign may have actually been drunk. Don’t drink, drive, or spell….
GO AHEAD DRINK AND DIVE
Or you could ignore the previous sign. To be fair, ‘GO AHEAD’ appears on one line and then ‘DRINK AND DRIVE’ followed by arrows to jail, the hospital and morgue follow. It’s a morbid warning but something gets lost in translation.
CAUTION SPEED BUMPS AHEAD
CHILDREN ARE NOT SPEED BUMPS! We wonder if this sign might encourage some to drive a little faster?
SLOW CHILDREN AT PLAY – HUNTING WITH SHOTGUN ONLY
This one needs a little explaining. ‘SLOW’ appears at the top, asking drivers to slow down. ‘CHILDREN AT PLAY’ appears at the bottom of the sign under a graphic of a small person playing. As for the secondary message encouraging passers-by to hunt with shotguns only… we’re not too sure.
SPEED LIMIT 12 ½
That’s right folks. The speed limit isn’t 12 mph, nor 13 mph but exactly 12.5mph. Let’s hope they don’t set up speed traps here!
STOP. NO STOPING AT ANY TIME
These two signs appear literally side by side leaving motorists with very few options. Didn’t someone realise what’s going on here when the signs were erected? Maybe the joke is actually on us?
Ahhh. Our favourite! Incredibly this is not a vandalised sign and while it’s not taken seriously we still wonder; has anyone actually done an about face and driven off in the opposite direction?
IN THE UK
America may be the undisputed king of crazy road signs, but the UK rates well in the weird stakes too.
LANE CLOSED TO EASE CONGESTION
We’re not sure how this actually works in the UK. In these parts we tend to open lanes to help quicken the flow of traffic. Hmmmm….
PHYSICALLY IMPOSSIBLE ENTRY
This road is not just impossible to enter, it’s ‘physically impossible’! And how do they know it’s so difficult to cross? Has someone tried and got physically stuck?
IN THE UAE
BEWARE OF ROAD SURPRISES
They’re not going to tell you what to beware of. That’s part of the surprise, we assume! While we assume the message has been lost in translation we can’t help giggle at all the possibilities – banana skins on the road? Unicorns? Or maybe zombies on the road really do exist…?
Apparently you don’t need to be cautious of all moose, just the INVINCIBLE moose, an aggressive beast who has it in for you and your vehicle and is totally indestructible.
IN SOUTH AFRICA
DANGER AHEAD FASTEN SAFETY BELTS AND REMOVE DENTURES
Oh how glorious! We take it back about the zombies. THIS is our favourite crazy sign for so many reasons. 1) What danger lies ahead? It’s very vague. 2) Just in case you were illegally driving without your life-saving seatbelt, now would be a good time to buckle up. 3) Remove dentures? A choking hazard they may be, but just how many drivers wear them, and is it really worth erecting a sign instructing those who do to de-denture?
